About Us

On 21 June 1995 a group of Slovenian scientists from the area of technical and natural sciences together with prominent engineers, members of the SATENA/IAS (the Slovenian Association of Technical and Natural Sciences) initiated the Slovenian Academy of Engineering (IAS), with the aim to provide a platform for the policy and formation of development prospects for the production industries, scientific and technological research activities, as well as of high-quality engineering studies in Slovenia. This inaugural event attended Prof. Dr Gunar Solenius, the President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), the first such engineering academy in the world, set up with the same aims in 1919.
By electing engineers and researchers that have demonstrated exceptional results in the areas of industry, science and education to become members of the IAS, the country shall provide important recognition to these Slovenes for their vital contribution to creating economic strength and prosperity for the nation and, in this way, to promoting the country’s national identity.

Deciding on important issues concerning industrial development and the formation of the guidelines for Slovenian industrial policy is a task requiring competent experts who can, working within the IAS and cooperating with the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) and with the other engineering academies around the world, contribute to the development of the Slovenian economy in the conditions of aggressive competition in the global markets.

Therefore, one of the main priorities of the IAS shall be to contribute, with work of high quality, to the promotion of our industrial identity. The production industries creating new products and technologies contribute the lion’s share of the national wealth, significantly improving, in this way, the living standards of the citizens of Slovenia. The revitalisation of the country’s industries that were, during the transition period, forced onto their knees, fragmented and sold off will be of crucial importance for the growth of our economic strength and our equality in Europe.

With special efforts and active involvement, the IAS shall foster the use of research results in the development of innovative products and technologies. These will allow the chemical engineering, electronics, information technology, computing, mechatronics systems, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, timber, textile, pharmaceutical, leather and food industries to have the high-quality and competitive production of new, high-technology products.

The members of the IAS shall be involved, with constructive proposals, in forming the priorities for scientific and technological research that, in the future, the government will, necessarily, have to finance.

Educating engineering personnel shall be the next important priority of the IAS. An involvement in forming the relevant future educational programmes for engineers is one of the key tasks of our Academy.

In 2000 the IAS was accepted as a member of the Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences, CAETS, with its main office in Washington.

In 2008 IAS was accepted as a member of the Euro-CASE, The European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering, which brings together national engineering academies from 23 European countries.

In this way, the possibility of intensive cooperation with the world’s most important relevant organisations was opened up to the IAS. Another important step was the start of our active cooperation with the respected Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) in all the important areas of science and technology for the general good of Slovenia. At its session on 23 November 2006 the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the act relating to the Engineering Academy of Slovenia. The act determines, in detail, the IAS’s role of a national institution, bringing together the elected members representing the technical sciences carried out within the public-research sphere, the economy and the technology-development sector.
